Engineering, Design & Assurance

Engineering confidence built into every connection, built on real-world manufacturing experience

Engineering That Goes Beyond Supply

GWEC provides design and engineering support built on decades of manufacturing experience and a deep understanding of offshore mooring systems across both traditional and emerging sectors. Our role is not simply to supply mooring chain and accessories, but to ensure that what is specified, designed, and delivered is suitable, fit for purpose and aligned across all stakeholders.

From early engagement through to supply and execution, we work alongside clients, designers, Classification Societies and manufacturers to assess design intent, challenge assumptions and manage technical interfaces. This ensures that requirements are not simply followed, but critically reviewed, reducing the risk of unsuitable, over-specified or costly solutions progressing into manufacture unnecessarily.

Engineering, Design & Assurance in Practice

Rather than focusing on supplying a broad range of equipment or pre-packaged solution, our approach centres on ensuring that the selected solution is technically appropriate, practical to manufacture and aligned with the specific demands of the application, whether defined by others or developed in collaboration with GWEC.

Where modifications or non-standard requirements arise, we can support redesign, engineering analysis, testing and certification, including coordination with Classification Societies. Manufacture and testing can be undertaken through our facilities or approved supply partner, ensuring alignment between design, production and compliance.

Where more specialist engineering is required, this can be delivered under GWEC’s management, providing continuity, technical oversight and a clear alignment throughout the process.

This approach ensures that both standard and bespoke solutions are engineered not only for compliance, but for practical manufacture, installation and long-term performance.

Mooring Systems for Offshore Oil & Gas

Drawing on decades of experience across FPS, CALM buoy and terminal mooring applications, GWEC supports clients in addressing practical challenges that arise during design, specification and operation.

This includes identifying mismatches between design approach and available components, resolving interfacing issues and supporting modification or requalification where standard solutions prove unsuitable or incorrectly specified. Where systems are not performing as intended, we can also support clients in identifying the root cause and implementing effective corrective measures, which has led to the development of proprietary solutions where standard equipment does not fully meet the operational requirements. See example of the “Deep Water Swivel” (pictured).

In many cases, these issues only become apparent during manufacture, installation or operation, where the consequences are significantly greater. By engaging early and remaining involved through delivery, we help reduce this risk, recognising that the cost of failure, downtime or late-stage redesign can far outweigh the effort required to establish the right solution from the outset.

Mooring Systems for Offshore Renewables

Drawing on real experience supporting offshore renewable projects, including floating wind, wave and tidal, GWEC contributes to early-stage discussions around mooring system selection, suitability, and interface with available hardware.

Where full mooring system design and analysis is required from seabed to surface, GWEC works with trusted specialist partners with proven expertise in offshore marine renewables, including on site operational support. In these cases, GWEC will support where required but does not act as the design authority.

This approach ensures access to specialist design capability where needed, while maintaining alignment between engineering requirements and the practical application of mooring components.

Engineering Confidence in Practice

Whether supporting conventional offshore developments or emerging renewable technologies, GWEC’s focus remains consistent, ensuring that the right solutions are selected, properly understood and delivered in a way that works in practice.

Our experience allows us to add value across key elements of the mooring system, particularly around component selection and interfacing within the mooring line, whether supporting client-defined solutions or working alongside specialist design partners.

By combining engineering insight with real-world manufacturing understanding, we help clients reduce risk, avoid costly issues and make informed decisions, delivering outcomes that go beyond the scope of traditional equipment suppliers.
