COP26 Climate Change Conference

GWEC’s Commercial Director, David Timmington was privileged to be invited to attend the UN’s Climate Change Conference ‘COP26’ in Glasgow. Events included a ‘Net Zero Manufacturing’ seminar and ‘Floating Offshore Wind’ business breakfast with keynote speech from Rt. Hon. Nicola Sturgeon MSP.

David commented that…

“A fundamental paradigm shift is required to achieve the ambitions expressed throughout the week, most notably a ‘Just Transition’. But the market is by no means perfect and will not react quickly enough to address the looming crisis. An appropriate regulatory and economic framework needs to be created, which requires urgent alignment of government policy, capital markets, corporate strategy and ultimately, personal consumption. Thoughts echoed by Greta Thunberg during her address to young activists in Glasgow “…it should be obvious that we cannot solve a crisis with the same methods that got us into it in the first place.” We all have a role to play, however small, but the burden should naturally fall on those with the broadest shoulders.”

GWEC is supporting the energy transition agenda through its membership of not-for-profit organisations, engagement with innovation and research centres, collaboration and leadership in technical committees and promoting the industry world-wide. By developing mooring systems suitable for floating wind our goal is to accelerate growth from demonstrator projects to full-scale arrays by 2030 and reduce levelized cost of energy.
